About Hyperbeat

Matthew and Nicholas Tait knew that a custom activewear brand would be a slam dunk idea. Throughout 2016, the brothers had watched with growing interest as the fitness industry boomed in Sydney, Australia. Every week there seemed to be a new yoga studio, Crossfit franchise, or boutique climbing gym in their neighborhood. With the market red-hot, their idea for top-notch compression leggings felt like a sure bet. So why then, when the Tait brothers launched Hyperbeat in 2017, was success elusive?

They had all the right skills, after all. Nicholas was the Head of Graphic Design for Essendon Football Club. Matthew was a savvy marketer, then a sales manager for a bank that specializes in distribution. Despite their solid execution, sales for Hyperbeat soon plateaued. Keen for a shake-up, Matthew ran a few experimental ads on social media. The twist: he advertised Hyperbeat not as a product, but as a productized service. Instead of selling activewear, Hyperbeat would add your brand logo to their premium activewear without any order minimums.

It worked like magic. Hyperbeat sold more leggings in a week than the entire year prior. And it was clear why the pivot had succeeded. Before Hyperbeat, fitness brands seeking to promote their business with customized apparel – and there were many – had the choice of two bad options. Either settle for cheap gear that deteriorates quickly or bankrupt yourself trying to meet the order minimums of high-quality manufacturers.

Hyperbeat stepped in to help the little guy, offering quality custom athletic apparel, no order minimums, plus delivery service. The business model was a runaway success. But after a savvy pivot, the growing company faced its next challenge: affordably shipping.

The Challenge

Matthew and Nicholas were helping startups avoid order minimums, so they appreciated the irony of suffering from the same problem when it came to shipping. As a small business, Hyperbeat could only afford to use a handful of slow-delivering economy couriers. A larger brand might have secured volume-based discounts from couriers or used more expensive services. But until sales and profits increased, they were stuck paying more for less. Additionally, they were on the hook for any loss, damage, or theft to shipments because their couriers lacked affordable shipping insurance.

With costs throttling growth, the company also lacked resources for much-needed quality control. As a result, a concerning number of orders were shipped out only to be returned for production defects. A quality product was a fundamental selling proposition for Hyperbeat, so the Tait brothers needed answers quickly.

How Easyship Helped

It was clear from the start that Easyship would be a game-changer for Hyperbeat. After a quick integration with their BigCommerce site, Matthew and Nicholas found the deep discount rates and wide courier selection they needed to unlock growth.

Better yet, everything shipping-related was located in one convenient app dashboard. “Easyship has taken the stress out of shipping,” said Matthew. “The ability to link directly with our Bigcommerce store, choose from reputable courier services, book at affordable rates, and insure our parcels with confidence made it an easy choice.”

With incoming orders synced into Easyship automatically, the brothers and their employees enjoyed total visibility and control over all shipping. The intuitive interface made it so anyone could, at a glance, compare rates, buy labels, and create shipments. And with label generation automated for all labels and customs documents, the team’s fulfillment time was halved with Easyship.

Shipping for less also freed up capital to hire a quality control manager. Finally confident that their outgoing product was up to par, the brothers decided to take on larger orders. Hyperbeat also used Easyship to purchase reliable third-party shipping insurance at just 1-3% of the shipment value. Fully covered if anything went awry, Hyperbeat’s profits and reputation were both secured.

With quality and profits on the rise, Nicholas and Matthew reinvested in the business. As a result, Hyperbeat was shipping to 4,000+ businesses in Australia and overseas in just six years – always at a profit.

"Easyship has enabled Hyperbeat to deliver on their promises of providing customers with speedy, functional, and intuitive user experiences,” said Shannon Ingrey, vice president and general manager, APAC at BigCommerce. “With a supportive technology infrastructure and key developer resources in place, Hyperbeat has been able to drive growth and pave the way to profitability."

Results

The savings and confidence from Easyship allowed Hyperbeat to hurdle obstacles and level up their business, including:

Increased sales 10% in a month

Discounted shipping saved Hyperbeat money every day, including on rush delivery services. Now able to service customers with “time-critical” orders, Hyperbeat enjoyed an immediate and sustained uptick in revenue of 10% from sales it formerly had to let pass. Affordable insurance for shipment also buoyed profits, prompting Matthew to seek out larger and more profitable orders.

Reduced label prep time by 50%

Given its ‘no minimum’ rule, Hyperbeat sells a high volume of orders, which makes for lots of fulfillment prep. With Easyship, the company cut out the tedious step of completing and printing shipping labels, invoices, and customs paperwork. Instead, Easyship automatically generates all shipping documents for you, allowing Hyperbeat to halve fulfillment time and save hours per week.
