Understanding USPS Non-Standard Rate Charges
Importantly for eCommerce merchants, Parcels exceeding one cubic foot are charged based on the actual weight or the dimensional weight, whichever of the two is greater.
This leads to a different rate category known as the non-standard rate charges. These charges are incurred when the package is different from a dimension set by the carrier and cannot be sorted into any of their dimension categories.Â
USPS Ground AdvantageÂ
- Nonstandard Length Fee (If a package has a length greater than 22” but less than 30”): $4.50
- Nonstandard Length Fee (If a packages length is greater than 30”"): $10.00
- Nonstandard Volume Fee (If a packages dimensions are greater than two cubic feet): $21.00
Priority Mail Express
- Nonstandard Length Fee (If a package has a length greater than 22” but less than 30”"): $4.50
- Nonstandard Length Fee (If a packages length is greater than 30”): $21.00
- Nonstandard Volume Fee (If a packages dimensions are greater than two cubic feet.): $35.00
Priority Mail Express
- Sunday/Holiday Delivery Fee: $12.50
- Nonstandard Length Fee (If a package has a length greater than 22” but less than 30”): $4.50
- Nonstandard Length Fee (If a packages length is greater than 30”): $21
- Nonstandard Volume Fee (If a packages dimensions are greater than two cubic feet.): $35

USPS Rate Change FAQs
What are the USPS price changes for 2026?‍
USPS has announced 2026 retail price increases effective from January 18, stating that customers can expect a 6.6% increase for Priority Mail, 5.1% for Priority Mail Express, and 7.8% for USPS Ground Advantage. There is no change for Media Mail services.
How does the 2026 price rise compare to the 2025 peak season USPS holiday shipping surcharges?
2026 pricing increases an average of 5.1% to 7.8% across most USPS parcel services. The 2025 peak season holiday surcharges charged by USPS from October 5, 2025 to January 18, 2026 were temporary, flat-dollar hikes of $0.19–$16 per package. Overall the 2026 prices replace the previous holiday surcharges.
Is there any price change for USPS Media Mail?
USPS Media Mail rates remain unchanged for January 2026.
How much does Priority Mail cost in 2026?
The exact cost depends on the shipping distance and package weight. These are retail rates effective January 18, 2026.
Weight-based rates:
- Lightweight (0.5–2 lb): ~$10.20–$19.95
- Midweight (3–10 lb): ~$11.55–$56.75
- Heavyweight (11–20 lb): ~$17.30–$101.30
Flat Rate boxes:
- Small Flat Rate Box: $12.65
- Medium Flat Rate Box: $22.95
- Large Flat Rate Box: $31.50
- Cubic pricing: Tiers 1–5: ~$23.65–$101.30
How often does USPS increase prices?‍
Typically twice a year in January and July. For 2026, the date is January 18, 2026, overtaking the 2025 holiday shipping surcharge that started in early October 2025. It’s likely that there will be another price rise initiated by USPS in mid-July 2026 followed by a new holiday surcharge starting in Q4 2026 for peak season (between Oct 2026 to January 2027).
How do I avoid potential fees and surcharges?‍
Use accurate weights and dimensions, avoid oversized/irregular packaging, and choose the right service for your parcel size. Tools like Easyship can help optimize packaging with smart box selection and automatic rate comparison while including all related fees upfront.
Why is USPS changing its pricing?‍
According to USPS, price changes are mainly influenced by shifts in operating costs (like labor, fuel, transportation, and facilities), plus the fundamental logistics of how mail moves—where package weight and dimensions, distance and shipping zones, and service speed change the underlying cost structure of parcel delivery (e.g. Express services via Air are more expensive than standard services via Ground).
Rates can also be impacted by seasonal demand during peak periods, regulatory requirements, and the need to stay competitive with other carriers in the broader shipping market. To see this in action, create a real-time shipping quote on Easyship.
