Key points

  • FedEx charges DAS per package to ZIP codes on its list, in three contiguous US tiers (standard, Extended and Remote) plus separate Alaska and Hawaii lists.
  • In 2026, DAS is $4.45 commercial and $6.60 residential. From January 4, 2027, it's $4.70 and $7.00.
  • Extended residential DAS rises 9.1% on January 4, 2027, from $8.80 to $9.60. FedEx's average base rate increase is 5.9%.
  • FedEx publishes its ZIP lists as PDFs. Search the full five-digit ZIP, leading zeros included.
  • FedEx One Rate waives standard and Extended DAS. Remote DAS still applies.

What Is the FedEx Delivery Area Surcharge?

The FedEx delivery area surcharge is a per-package fee on listed ZIP codes. In 2026 it costs $4.45 to $8.80, or $16.75 for Remote ZIPs.

FedEx charges it because rural and low-density routes cost more per stop.

  • It depends on the ZIP code. The destination ZIP decides whether the fee applies. Weight and size don't change the amount, and FedEx Express, FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery pay the same DAS in 2026.
  • It applies automatically. FedEx adds it when the label is created. There's no opt-out.
  • The list can change without notice. A long-standing customer can start costing more after an update.

On a FedEx invoice, DAS Comm is the surcharge on a package to a business address and DAS Resi is the surcharge on a package to a home. Extended ZIPs show as Delivery Area Surcharge Extended Comm or Extended Resi.

How Much Is the FedEx Delivery Area Surcharge in 2026 and 2027?

In 2026, FedEx DAS is $4.45 per commercial package and $6.60 per residential package. On January 4, 2027, it rose to $4.70 and $7.00.

Here's the full FedEx DAS rate table, per package, for FedEx Express, FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery.

Hawaii (commercial and residential) $16.25 $17.50 +7.7%

Which FedEx DAS ZIP Codes Change on January 4, 2027?

FedEx publishes a new DAS ZIP list effective January 4, 2027. Some ZIP codes move into a more expensive tier, and some are added for the first time.

If a residential customer's ZIP moves from Extended to Remote, their DAS goes from $8.80 in 2026 to $17.75 in 2027. That's more than double, with nothing about the order changing.

FedEx also changes the list mid-year, as it did on July 20, 2026, so recheck your top destinations against every new list.

How to Calculate What FedEx DAS Costs Your Business

For a high-volume shipper, a few dollars per label adds up to thousands a year. If you offer free or flat-rate shipping, all of it comes out of your margin.

To see your monthly cost:

  1. Export 3 to 6 months of shipments with destination ZIP codes and address types.
  2. Match each ZIP against the FedEx DAS list for that ship date.
  3. Count packages per tier and address type.
  4. Multiply each count by its fee and add them up.
  5. Repeat with 2027 fees and the 2027 list to see next year's cost.

Worked example: one month

Take a brand shipping 1,500 FedEx Home Delivery parcels a month, all to homes. Say 255 of them (17%) go to listed ZIP codes: 180 standard DAS, 60 Extended and 15 Remote. Use your own split.

Tier Packages 2026 Fee 2026 Cost Fee From Jan 4, 2027 Cost From Jan 4, 2027
DAS, residential 180 $6.60 $1,188.00 $7.00 $1,260.00
Extended DAS, residential 60 $8.80 $528.00 $9.60 $576.00
Remote 15 $16.75 $251.25 $17.75 $266.25
Total 255 $1,967.25 $2,102.25

That's $1,967.25 a month in DAS today and $2,102.25 from January 4. The rate change alone adds $135 a month, or $1,620 a year, without a single extra order. At 15,000 parcels a month with the same split, that's $16,200 a year.

What Other FedEx Charges Stack on Top of DAS?

A home delivery to a FedEx DAS ZIP pays $6.60 in DAS plus the $6.45 Ground residential charge in 2026, and fuel surcharge can apply on top.

Charges that commonly sit alongside DAS:

  • Residential delivery charge: $6.45 for FedEx Ground and Home Delivery and $6.95 for FedEx Express in 2026, rising to $6.90 and $7.35 on January 4, 2027.
  • Fuel surcharge: a weekly percentage FedEx applies to the transportation charge and to both DAS and the residential charge. For the week of November 2, 2026, it's 29.25% for Ground and 33.25% for domestic Express packages.
  • Pickup area surcharge: if FedEx collects from a listed ZIP, it charges $6.20 to $15.50 per stop in 2026.

So a Remote home delivery by FedEx Ground pays $23.20 in DAS and residential fees in 2026. At 29.25% fuel, that becomes about $29.99 before the base rate.

How Do UPS, USPS and DHL Charge Delivery Area Surcharges?

  • UPS surcharge uses the same three tiers. Its 2026 residential DAS is $6.55 standard, $8.85 Extended and $16.50 Remote, and it changes on December 21, 2026. Read our guide to the UPS delivery area surcharge [link: UPS DAS blog].
  • USPS doesn't charge an area surcharge. It prices distance into its zones instead, and adds an 8% fuel surcharge on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage until January 17, 2027. [VERIFY: still current]
  • DHL Express charges a Remote Area Surcharge on international shipments, per kilogram with a minimum per shipment. [VERIFY]

The same address can sit in different tiers with FedEx and UPS, so check each carrier's own list.

How Can You Reduce or Avoid the FedEx Delivery Area Surcharge?

You can't remove DAS from a listed ZIP, but you can pay less overall. Three ways:

Negotiate DAS in your FedEx agreement

DAS is negotiable in a FedEx contract, separate from your base rate discount. Bring 12 to 18 months of data: packages per tier, total DAS spend, and DAS as a share of your total shipping cost.

Use FedEx One Rate for Express parcels

FedEx One Rate waives standard and Extended DAS on Express shipments. Remote DAS still applies, at $16.75 per package in 2026.

One Rate also waives the residential charge and fuel, and you can book it on Easyship too.

Compare FedEx rates on Easyship

DAS is set by FedEx. Easyship can lower the FedEx rate you pay, and DAS stays off your Easyship invoice.

  • Discounted FedEx rates. Easyship has pre-negotiated rates across every FedEx service, from Ground and Home Delivery to Express and One Rate.
  • Keep your own account in the comparison. Connect your own FedEx account through Link Your Own Courier [link: LYOC page] and see both sets of rates side by side. If Easyship's FedEx rates come in lower, ship on those instead.
  • Compare couriers for the same shipment. See FedEx, UPS and USPS rates for the same parcel and pick the cheaper one.
  • No DAS on your Easyship invoice. FedEx DAS charges don't appear on the Easyship invoice.

FAQ

Is the FedEx delivery area surcharge the same as the residential delivery charge?

No. They're separate fees. The residential delivery charge applies to every FedEx delivery to a home. DAS applies only when the ZIP code is on FedEx's DAS list. A rural home delivery pays both.

What does DAS Comm mean on a FedEx invoice?

DAS Comm is the FedEx delivery area surcharge on a package to a business address in a listed ZIP code. It's $4.45 in 2026 and $4.70 from January 4, 2027.

Is the FedEx delivery area surcharge charged per package or per shipment?

Per package for standard FedEx shipments. FedEx Express and Ground Multiweight shipments pay up to a cap per shipment instead, from $22.25 to $83.75 in 2026.

Does FedEx One Rate waive the delivery area surcharge?

Yes, for standard and Extended DAS. Remote DAS still applies to One Rate shipments.

Does FedEx charge DAS to Alaska and Hawaii?

Yes. Listed Alaska ZIPs pay $46.00 per package and listed Hawaii ZIPs pay $16.25 in 2026, for homes and businesses. These rise to $48.75 and $17.50 on January 4, 2027. FedEx Ground Economy charges $8.80 for both.
