Adafruit

Adafruit, an open-source hardware company, reduced shipping errors and simplified fulfillment using Easyship’s API, processing over 160,000 labels to date.

Before Easyship

  • Relied on outdated, unsupported postal software for USPS shipments.

  • Shipping software lacked coordination and individual workstations couldn’t share order data.

  • Frequent bugs meant label printing errors and missing shipment records.

  • Troubleshooting required internal teams to manage complex shipping systems.

  • Operational inefficiencies caused delays and headaches for the fulfillment team.

With Easyship

  • Seamless Public API integration replaced legacy software for USPS and FedEx shipping.

  • Centralized dashboard improved visibility, searchability, and error resolution.

  • Label generation became more reliable, eliminating tracking and logging issues.

  • Reduced costs by accessing better USPS rates — up to 20% savings passed onto customers.

  • Enabled scale with 160,000+ domestic labels and growing international capacity.

About Adafruit

Adafruit is a US-based open-source hardware company that designs and sells DIY electronics, kits, and accessories. From turning a rice cooker into a sous vide machine to teaching students how to code with Python, Adafruit’s products are beloved by hobbyists, educators, and institutions around the world.

With a mission rooted in education and innovation, Adafruit needed a shipping solution that was as reliable and accessible as their products.

Their Challenge

After over a decade of growth, Adafruit’s in-house fulfillment system was showing its age.

“We were using this really ancient piece of software for USPS shipments — it broke constantly, and our team was one of the last still using it.”

  • Jonathan Greaser, Director of Fulfillment and Shipping, Adafruit

Each shipping station operated in isolation. If an error occurred, staff had to figure out which workstation created the label and manually troubleshoot, often delaying the shipment and frustrating the team.

Additionally, Adafruit wanted to future-proof their fulfillment setup with more flexibility. A potential UPS strike in 2022 forced them to consider switching providers, and integrating new carrier APIs manually would have required enormous development time.

How Easyship Helped

“We saw Easyship as a strategic partner to simplify our operations, avoid carrier lock-in, and centralize our shipment management.”

  • Jonathan Greaser, Director of Fulfillment and Shipping, Adafruit

Adafruit implemented Easyship’s Public API, allowing their custom shipping software to integrate seamlessly with Easyship’s system. This move replaced their legacy USPS tool and enabled the business to scale.

  • Improved API Integration:
“Integrating Easyship was far easier than working directly with a carrier API. Our dev team had a much better experience.”

  • Centralized Dashboard Efficiency:
“Having everything in one place helps tremendously. I can quickly search shipments, issue refunds, spot problem addresses, and analyze trends—all without needing custom internal tools.”

  • Flexible Carrier Access:
“With Easyship, we’re not locked into one carrier. If we ever needed to pivot away from UPS or DHL, we already have the flexibility to do that without more integrations.”

  • Reduced Errors & Support Overhead:
“We have far fewer errors. Since we don't need to allocate resources on maintaining previous software, we can spend our time and energy on other areas of our operations.”

Results & Impact

Adafruit has created over 160,000 domestic labels through Easyship since May 2023, with an average daily volume of 500–600 orders. Delivery errors have plummeted, and operational efficiency has improved significantly.

Their USPS rates dropped by up to 20%, with those savings passed directly to customers. With the ability to now easily compare carrier pricing and service options, Adafruit maintains cost transparency and control.

“Easyship’s dashboard is intuitive and powerful. It’s made our team faster, reduced mistakes, and allowed us to scale with confidence,” said

  • Jonathan Greaser, Director of Fulfillment and Shipping, Adafruit

Customer satisfaction has also benefited, with shipping confirmations and faster warehouse processing times giving peace of mind to a community that values precision and responsiveness.

Adafruit plans to expand its international shipping operations and Easyship is expected to play a key role. The team is currently exploring more international carrier options via the platform and sees Easyship as a long-term logistics partner.

“Easyship gives us a simple, comprehensive way to deal with a wide variety of shipments. That’s exactly what we need to keep growing.”
