You buy a shipping label, pack the order and send it off. Days later, you notice an extra $8.80 charge on that same parcel. That extra charge is often a delivery area surcharge, or DAS.
A delivery area surcharge is a per-package fee a carrier adds when the delivery ZIP code is on its DAS list. UPS, FedEx and OnTrac all call it DAS, DHL Express calls it Remote Area Delivery, and USPS builds it into higher rates for some rural ZIP codes. It is important to note that it is not a part of the peak season surcharges.Â
What is a Delivery Area Surcharge (DAS)?
A delivery area surcharge (DAS) is an extra fee carriers charge per package to deliver to hard-to-reach ZIP codes. In 2026, FedEx charges $4.45 to $16.75. The fee is added on top of the shipping rate, whatever service you choose.
Carriers charge DAS because rural areas, islands and outer suburbs cost more to reach. In a city, a driver can drop off dozens of parcels on one short route. In the countryside, the houses are far apart, so each parcel needs more fuel and more of the driver’s time.
Each carrier keeps its own list of DAS ZIP codes.
Example: Jackson is the capital of Mississippi. On FedEx’s DAS ZIP code list for 2027, ZIP code 39212 in Jackson has a DAS, but ZIP code 39201 in downtown Jackson doesn’t. Same city, different fee.
A ZIP code on FedEx’s DAS list may not be on UPS’s or OnTrac’s list, and the other way around.
What are the Delivery Area Surcharge Tiers?
UPS and FedEx both sort DAS ZIP codes into 3 tiers. The harder an address is to reach, the higher the tier and the fee.
- Standard tier: suburbs, small towns and parts of cities just outside the carrier’s usual routes. ZIP 39212 in Jackson, Mississippi is one example
- Extended tier: rural areas, small towns and islands that need a longer drive. Chincoteague, an island town in Virginia (ZIP 23336), is in FedEx’s Extended tier
- Remote tier: Alaska, Hawaii and the hardest places to reach in the other 48 states. UPS calls this tier a Remote Area Surcharge
In the Standard and Extended tiers, a home address costs more than a business address. The Remote tier usually has one price for both.
How Much is the Delivery Area Surcharge in 2026?
In 2026, DAS costs $4.50 to $8.85 per package with UPS and $4.45 to $8.80 with FedEx. Remote areas cost $16.50 with UPS and $16.75 with FedEx. Alaska costs the most, at $46.25 with UPS.

These are list prices per package for the 48 connected states. FedEx charges $46 for Alaska.Â
UPS charges the same DAS for its ground and air services. You can see more UPS prices in our UPS shipping rates breakdown.
Regional carrier OnTrac, which now includes LaserShip, charges $6.60 for DAS and $8.80 for Extended DAS per package in November 2026. DHL Express charges its Remote Area Delivery fee per shipment instead: $50, or $0.50 per lb, whichever is higher, according to DHL Express’s US surcharge page in November 2026. DHL eCommerce, its US domestic service, uses the name Delivery Area Surcharge.
FedEx is raising every DAS fee on 4 January 2027. The biggest change is for home addresses in the Extended tier, which go from $8.80 to $9.60 per package.
Why do Delivery Area Surcharges Matter for Your Margins?
Delivery area surcharges matter because they stack. A rural home delivery with FedEx Ground in 2026 carries $8.80 for DAS plus $6.45 for the residential surcharge, which is $15.25 in extra fees before the shipping rate.
FedEx then adds its fuel surcharge on top of both fees.
So how much does that add up to over a year? If you send 20 parcels like that every week, you pay $176 a week in DAS alone, or $9,152 a year. For a small store, that’s a real dent in profit, and switching carriers on those ZIP codes can cut it.
How do Carriers Calculate the Delivery Area Surcharge?
Carriers calculate the delivery area surcharge by checking the delivery ZIP code against their DAS list, finding its tier and address type, then adding a set fee per package. For example, a home in FedEx’s Standard tier costs $6.60 per package in 2026.
- Check the ZIP code. The carrier looks for the delivery ZIP code on its DAS list.
- Find the tier. The list shows whether the ZIP is in the Standard, Extended or Remote tier.
- Check the address type. The carrier checks whether it’s a home or a business.
- Find the fee. The carrier’s price list gives the fee for that tier and address type.
- Add it to every package. UPS, FedEx and OnTrac charge DAS per package, so 3 boxes to the same address means paying it 3 times. DHL Express charges per shipment, by weight, with a $50 minimum.
- Add fuel. FedEx adds its fuel surcharge on top of DAS.
- Add any other fees. A residential surcharge or a fee for a large box can be added to the same parcel.
Example: how the cheapest carrier changes
We used the Easyship shipping rate calculator on 2 November 2026 to price the same 5 lb (2.3 kg) parcel to 2 homes:
- Downtown Jackson, Mississippi (39201), which isn’t on FedEx’s DAS list
- Chincoteague, Virginia (23336), which is in FedEx’s Extended tier
| Service |
To Jackson, MS |
To Chincoteague, VA |
| UPS Ground |
$11.44 (cheapest) |
$13.33 |
| USPS Ground Advantage |
$11.97 |
$10.98 (cheapest) |
UPS Ground was cheapest to Jackson. For Chincoteague, USPS was $2.35 cheaper, so compare carriers on every rural order.
How Do You Check if an Address is in a DAS Zone?
To check if an address is in a DAS zone, look up its ZIP code on each carrier’s DAS list. FedEx’s next list starts on 4 January 2027. Then compare carriers for that ZIP code, because each one prices it differently.
To find out which of your customers get charged DAS:
- Look at your past bills. Find the DAS charges on your UPS and FedEx invoices, or the adjustment charges in your shipping account.
- Sort them by ZIP code. You’ll quickly see which areas cost you the most.
- Download the carriers’ DAS lists. UPS and FedEx both publish them, and FedEx says it can change its list without notice.
- Check your top ZIP codes. Look up the 50 to 100 ZIP codes you ship to most.
- Compare carriers for those ZIP codes. Use the Easyship shipping rate calculator to see UPS, FedEx and USPS prices side by side.
- Check again when the lists change. Start with FedEx’s update on 4 January 2027.
Easyship doesn’t have its own DAS ZIP code lookup, so use the carriers’ lists for this step.
Is a Delivery Area Surcharge the Same as a Residential Surcharge?
No. A residential surcharge is for home addresses. DAS is for certain ZIP codes. A rural home can get both, like $6.45 plus $6.60 with FedEx Ground in 2026. UPS charges its own residential surcharge of $6.50 for Ground.
- Residential surcharge: you pay it because you’re delivering to a home.
- Delivery area surcharge: you pay it because the ZIP code is on the carrier’s DAS list. It can be a home or a business.
You can read more in our help article on residential address surcharges.
Does USPS Charge a Delivery Area Surcharge?
Not by name. The USPS price list has no delivery area surcharge, but since September 2024 discounted USPS rates to about 17,800 rural ZIP codes cost more.Â
In our 2 November 2026 quote to Chincoteague, Virginia (ZIP 23336), USPS Ground Advantage still cost $10.98 against $13.33 for UPS Ground.
USPS never announced the change officially. Sellers found it through eBay’s shipping notices, and Value Added Resource tracked the ZIP list. Outside those ZIP codes, USPS prices by weight and distance across 9 zones, listed on Postal Explorer. For many rural addresses, USPS Ground Advantage is still worth checking.
USPS does have its own size and weight limits. Check the total price for each ZIP code before you pick a carrier. Our USPS vs UPS vs FedEx guide covers the other differences.
How Can You Reduce Delivery Area Surcharges?
To reduce delivery area surcharges, start with the first of 6 ways: compare carriers on every rural order. In our 2 November 2026 quotes, the cheapest carrier switched from UPS to USPS between 2 ZIP codes.
For most small sellers, this is the simplest habit to build. The other 5 ways help once you know which ZIP codes cost you most:
- Send DAS ZIP codes to a different carrier. If certain ZIP codes or states keep getting DAS, ship those orders with whichever carrier charges least there. That’s often USPS, but check each ZIP.
- Ask your carrier for a better deal. If you have your own UPS or FedEx account, show them a year of your DAS charges by ZIP code and ask for a lower fee on your busiest areas.
- Store stock closer to your customers. If most of your DAS orders go to one region, a warehouse nearby can shorten the trip.
- Add the cost at checkout. Charge a small extra shipping fee for DAS ZIP codes, or set a higher free shipping minimum for them. Try it on 5 to 10 ZIP codes first to see how customers react.
- Check your bills. Carriers sometimes charge DAS on the wrong ZIP code. Compare your charges with the carrier’s DAS list and ask for a refund if they don’t match.

How much is the UPS delivery area surcharge?
In 2026, UPS charges $4.50 for a business and $6.55 for a home in the Standard tier. In the Extended tier, it’s $5.70 for a business and $8.85 for a home.
Why am I being charged a DAS by FedEx?
The ZIP code you shipped to is on FedEx’s DAS list. FedEx can add ZIP codes to its list without warning, so a customer who never had a DAS before can start getting one.

Do Easyship’s discounts apply to delivery area surcharges?
No. The discount applies to the shipping rate. DAS is charged separately by the carrier and can show up as an adjustment on your Easyship account.
