Key Points

  • Royal Mail publishes fixed domestic rates for all UK addresses; FedEx prices domestic shipments through business contracts
  • FedEx international services are faster but cost far more than Royal Mail International Tracked
  • Royal Mail delivers to every UK postcode at the same price; FedEx applies remote area surcharges for select postcodes
  • Royal Mail Tracked includes ÂŁ75 compensation by default; FedEx requires you to declare a value and pay an uplift fee
  • With Easyship, you can compare rates from both couriers alongside 550+ others in one place before committing to a label

For online retailers and e-commerce businesses shipping from the UK, the choice between Royal Mail and FedEx comes down to one question: are you shipping domestically, or internationally in a hurry?

Royal Mail is the default for cost-effective domestic and standard international parcel delivery. FedEx is built for speed, particularly on international routes, and becomes worth the cost when a parcel needs to reach Paris or New York in 24 to 48 hours rather than five days. Many UK businesses end up using both  Royal Mail for volume domestic shipping, FedEx for time-critical international deliveries.

This guide breaks down the actual rates, delivery timelines, and insurance differences so you can make a clear decision based on your specific shipping needs.

If you want to skip the manual comparison entirely, Easyship lets you pull live rates from Royal Mail, FedEx, and 550+ other couriers in a single dashboard. You see the cheapest, fastest, and best-value option for each shipment without switching between tabs.

What Is the Key Difference Between Royal Mail and FedEx?

Royal Mail is a universal postal service. Under its Universal Service Obligation (USO), it must deliver to every UK address at a standard price, six days a week. That guarantee covers everything from a flat in central London to a croft in the Outer Hebrides.

FedEx is a private courier and delivery company with no USO. It charges more for remote UK destinations and builds its model around speed and volume. Domestic pricing isn't listed on a public rate card. You can get rates through a business account.

The two services serve different primary use cases, which is why many UK businesses use both rather than choosing one.

What Services Does Royal Mail Offer, and What Do They Cost?

Royal Mail's business-relevant services cover domestic UK parcel delivery and international tracked shipments. Prices are published, consistent across all UK addresses, and don't require a contract to access. For domestic, Tracked 48 starts at £2.85 online and Tracked 24 at £3.80  both include photo on delivery and £75 compensation.

Parcel size reference:

  • Small Parcel: max 450 Ă— 350 Ă— 160mm, up to 2kg
  • Medium Parcel: max 610 Ă— 460 Ă— 460mm, up to 20kg

The right service depends on your parcel type, delivery speed requirement, and whether you need a guaranteed time slot. Both Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 are online-only products  you buy postage via Click and Drop or a connected platform, drop off at a Post Office or Royal Mail Shop, or book a collection pickup. They include photo on delivery, SMS or email notifications to recipients, and compensation up to £75.

Starting prices reflect the smallest format. Parcel rates increase by weight band, a 2kg small parcel costs more than a 100g large letter under the same service.

Royal Mail Special Delivery also offers a Saturday delivery guarantee for an additional fee, which is useful for businesses whose customers shop over the weekend and expect next business day delivery options that don't exclude Saturdays.

For SMBs: Tracked 48 is the workhorse for most ecommerce businesses sending small parcels. It's trackable, includes £75 cover, and costs under £3 for lighter shipments. Tracked 24 is worth the small premium when your customers expect next day delivery. Happy customers come back  and reliable delivery is one of the key factors in customer satisfaction for UK retailers.

For enterprises: Royal Mail 24 and 48 integrate directly into warehouse management systems via their API. At scale, Royal Mail Direct contracts unlock tiered rates based on monthly volume.

If you are to ship a 2kg parcel from London to Surrey, here are what the rates will look like. We have used Easyship’s shipping rate calculator to calculate the rates incurred while shipping via Royal Mail and FedEx.

Royal Mail International and European Rates

Every international parcel needs a customs declaration (CN22 for items under ÂŁ270, CN23 for items above). This applies to all destinations, including the EU, following Brexit.

From 1 July 2026, new customs duty requirements apply for goods entering the EU. Royal Mail has confirmed their postage prices to the EU won't change on 1 July 2026, but handling charges may apply to goods subject to import duty..

For businesses sending parcels regularly to the same international destinations, Royal Mail's published rate structure makes it easy to predict shipping costs, an advantage over international couriers that require a contract before you can get a rate.

What Services Does FedEx Offer, and What Do They Cost?

FedEx's UK portfolio covers four domestic timed services  from next day before 9am through to a 2–3 day economy option  and a full range of international shipping services for parcels up to 68kg. Domestic rates are account-based and not publicly listed. International Priority to Western Europe starts at £80.63 per 0.5kg under contracted pricing.

Unlike Royal Mail, FedEx doesn't publish a standard domestic rate card. Domestic pricing is account-based. You get your rate when you open a business account or negotiate a contract.

For an estimate, FedEx's rate calculator is at fedex.com/en-gb.

FedEx UK Domestic Services

Source: FedEx UK Domestic Shipping

Service Delivery Max Weight
FedEx First Next day before 9am, 9:30am, or 10am 68kg
FedEx Priority Express Next day by noon 68kg
FedEx Priority Next business day by end of day 68kg
FedEx Economy 2–3 business days 68kg

A note on additional costs: FedEx applies a remote area surcharge on deliveries to certain postcodes  Scottish Highlands, Scottish Islands, Northern Ireland, and other rural areas. These aren't always visible upfront, so factor them in when comparing cost against Royal Mail, which has no such surcharge. Hidden fees like these can shift the value calculation on domestic routes.

FedEx International Rates

FedEx international rates are contracted rather than publicly listed. The figures below are from the FedEx UK Export Rate Guide (January 2026) and apply to customers under specific pricing agreements.

Rates shown are for Zone R (Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands)  the most common export destinations from the UK. FedEx offers international services to 220+ countries, making it one of the more extensive options for global shipping.

Weight FedEx International Priority FedEx International Economy FedEx International Connect Plus FedEx International Priority Express
0.5kg ÂŁ44.35 ÂŁ67.77 - ÂŁ45.49
1kg ÂŁ48.83 - ÂŁ30.25 ÂŁ50.05
2kg ÂŁ72.19 ÂŁ70.33 ÂŁ33.43 ÂŁ72.04
5kg ÂŁ74.09 ÂŁ95.51 ÂŁ37.95 ÂŁ76.88
10kg ÂŁ100.83 - ÂŁ46.96 ÂŁ103.40

Rates for farther destinations (Italy, Iberia, Nordic countries) sit in higher zones and cost more. Worldwide international deliveries start from around £61–£115 for 0.5kg depending on the zone. All FedEx rates exclude VAT. Fuel surcharge and other ancillary charges apply on top.

For SMBs: FedEx international is hard to justify on cost for standard parcel weights under 2kg. It makes sense when delivery speed is the deciding factor of a customer waiting on an urgent order, or goods where next day delivery to Europe protects a sale or maintains customer loyalty.

For enterprises: At 50+ international shipments per month, negotiated FedEx rates come down meaningfully. Most large UK ecommerce operations run FedEx for time-sensitive international lanes and Royal Mail for standard volume, accessing discounted rates on both through volume agreements.

How Does Insurance Compare Between Royal Mail and FedEx?

Royal Mail builds compensation into its Tracked services by default  £75 on Tracked 24/48, up to £2,500 on Special Delivery. FedEx's standard liability is limited under international carriage conventions; you pay an additional fee per $100 USD of value to raise it. Neither covers everything, which is where third-party protection fills the gap.

Royal Mail FedEx
ÂŁ75 (Tracked 24/48) Limited by international convention
Up to ÂŁ2,500 (Special Delivery) Depends on declared value level
Up to ÂŁ250 for International Tracked (+ÂŁ3.10) Declared Value for Carriage (fee per $100 USD)
Not available on standard tracked Available via declared value uplift

Royal Mail's compensation is straightforward. Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 cover you for ÂŁ75 automatically. For Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm starts at ÂŁ750 and can be extended to ÂŁ2,500 for an additional fee. International Tracked includes ÂŁ50 standard, upgradable to ÂŁ750.

FedEx doesn't provide cargo all-risks insurance. What they offer is Declared Value for Carriage, which sets FedEx's maximum liability above standard convention limits. You pay a fee for each additional $100 USD of declared value. The maximum varies by service and destination.

Neither courier's coverage is comprehensive enough for high-value shipments. That's where third-party shipment protection makes sense.

With Easyship, every shipment includes up to $10,000 in protection  regardless of which courier you use. That covers Royal Mail Tracked, FedEx, and any of the 550+ couriers on the platform, with one consistent claims process.

FedEx vs Royal Mail: How Do Delivery Times Compare?

For domestic UK shipping, Royal Mail and FedEx are closely matched. Both deliver next day on their express services and in 2–3 business days on economy. The difference shows on international routes: FedEx reaches Western Europe in 1–2 days, Royal Mail in 3–5. For worldwide shipments, FedEx's 1–3 day window versus Royal Mail's 5–7 day aim is a material gap that matters when you're trying to meet customer expectations on delivery time.

Route Royal Mail FedEx
UK domestic standard delivery 2–3 days (Tracked 48) 2–3 days (Economy)
UK domestic express Next day aim (Tracked 24) Next day by noon (Priority Express)
UK domestic guaranteed Guaranteed by 1pm next day (Special Delivery) Guaranteed by 9am next day (FedEx First)
Europe 3–5 days (International Tracked) 1–2 days (International Priority)
Worldwide 5–7 days (International Tracked) 1–3 days (International Priority)

If your priority is domestic speed, both couriers are comparable. If your priority is international speed, FedEx is faster  but at a higher cost. Customer expectations around delivery speed have risen sharply, so the right choice also depends on what you've promised at checkout.

Royal Mail vs FedEx: Which One Works Better?

There's no single answer  the right courier depends on what you're sending, where it's going, and how fast it needs to arrive. Key factors include parcel type, destination, delivery speed, and whether you need a fixed or flexible cost structure. For most UK SMBs, Royal Mail covers the bulk of shipments at a lower cost. FedEx earns its higher price tag on time-sensitive international routes and when next day delivery is non-negotiable.

Scenario Better Option
Domestic parcels under 2kg Royal Mail Tracked 48
Next day delivery, no time guarantee needed Royal Mail Tracked 24
Next day delivery, guaranteed time slot Royal Mail Special Delivery
Saturday delivery for weekend orders Royal Mail Special Delivery (Saturday Guarantee)
Delivering to all UK postcodes at one flat rate Royal Mail (USO applies)
Express international to Europe (1–2 days) FedEx International Priority
Standard international on a tighter budget Royal Mail International Tracked
High-value or time-critical international goods FedEx with declared value
Remote UK postcodes (Highlands, Islands) Royal Mail

A note on Royal Mail's Universal Service Obligation: By law, Royal Mail must deliver to every UK address at the same price. A parcel to a Highland postcode costs the same as one to central Manchester. FedEx adds a remote area surcharge for many of these destinations  worth checking if you send parcels across the full UK.

For SMBs: Start with Royal Mail Tracked 48 for domestic and Royal Mail International Tracked for standard cross-border parcels. Both are cost-effective, trackable, and don't require a contract. As your international volume grows, add FedEx for priority lanes where delivery speed directly affects customer satisfaction.

For enterprises: Most high-volume UK shippers use different couriers for different routes. Royal Mail handles the bulk of domestic and standard international volume. FedEx covers express international and any shipment where next day delivery to Europe or a 48-hour service to the US is what the end customer paid for.

Trying to work out which courier gives you the best value for your specific parcel? Easyship's rate comparison tool shows you live rates from Royal Mail, FedEx, and 550+ couriers side by side  including discounted rates you wouldn't access by going direct. Pick the right shipping service per shipment rather than a blanket courier for everything.

FAQs

Is Royal Mail cheaper than FedEx for UK shipping?

For domestic parcels, yes. Royal Mail Tracked 48 starts at ÂŁ2.85 for the smallest format, with no contract required. FedEx UK domestic pricing is account-based and standard rates typically come in higher than Royal Mail's published prices for most small and medium parcel sizes. The gap narrows at higher volumes when FedEx rates are negotiated.

Does FedEx provide better tracking than Royal Mail?

Both offer full end-to-end courier tracking. FedEx provides real-time updates and proof of delivery across all services. Royal Mail's Tracked 24 and Tracked 48 include photo on delivery, SMS or email notifications to the recipient, and delivery confirmation. For most B2C parcels, Royal Mail's tracking quality is comparable. FedEx has an edge on international tracking granularity for complex multi-leg shipments.

Which courier is better for international shipping from the UK?

It depends on whether cost or speed is the priority. FedEx International Priority delivers to most of Europe in 1–2 days. Royal Mail International Tracked takes 3–5 days but costs far less. A 1kg small parcel to Europe Zone 1 costs £15.15 via Royal Mail, compared to around £91.82 via FedEx International Priority at contracted rates. For standard volume international shipping, Royal Mail is the more cost-effective courier service.

What happens if my parcel is lost or damaged?

With Royal Mail Tracked 24/48, you're automatically covered up to £75. Special Delivery extends that to £2,500. With FedEx, standard liability is limited under international carriage conventions  the exact amount depends on the route and service. To increase FedEx's liability, you declare a higher value at booking and pay an additional fee per $100 USD. For comprehensive protection on either courier, Easyship includes up to $10,000 shipment protection on every order.

Does Royal Mail deliver to all UK postcodes at the same price?

Yes. Royal Mail's Universal Service Obligation requires it to deliver to every UK address at a standard price, six days a week. This includes Scottish Highlands, remote islands, and rural addresses where private couriers frequently add remote area surcharges. If your customer base spans rural UK, Royal Mail's uniform pricing is a meaningful cost advantage.

Can a UK business use both Royal Mail and FedEx?

Yes, and most high-volume businesses do. A common setup is Royal Mail for domestic bulk and standard international parcels, and FedEx for express international or time-critical shipments. Other international couriers  including DHL Express and UPS  are also worth comparing depending on your destination mix and volume. Easyship lets you manage multiple couriers from one platform, compare rates per shipment, and pick the right option without logging into separate accounts.
